National Grand Theater of China, Beijing

National Grand Theater of China which is sometimes referred to as Beijing Opera House, but is nicknamed “The Egg” is actually officially called – National Centre for Performing Arts (国家大剧院). It is one of the new landmarks of the city which is located in the very heart of it, right next to Great Hall of the People in Tian An Men Square. What makes it apart is the unusual architecture that looks like an egg. The building is surrounded by an artificial lake and when looking at it and it’s reflection it forms the shape of an egg. It is especially beautiful in the evening when it’s titanium and glass dome is sparkling lights.

First time I saw this ellipsoidal construction being built in the heart of Beijing, I assumed they are building a sports arena, a stadium of some kind. But of course I was wrong, it was the Opera House as I’ve been told. In December 2007, after 6 years since the beginning of construction, the first concert was held and “The Egg” became part the Chinese capital city.

  • Facebook gets a facelift!

    Facebook gets a facelift!

Yesterday facebook launched a redesign campaign for the most popular social network platform in the world. You can view the new facelift yourself at http://www.new.facebook.com and login with your existent username and password.

The redesign will give users more control over their profiles, will help prevent and fight spam and is generally trying to simplify the look and feel of the site. Officials from facebook declared that they want users to have more control of the information presented, they want users to decide what to leave on their sites and what do delete. The new design emphasizes on what people are doing socially and how it can be best shown for each particular individual.

One of the most important things in my opinion is that facebook can listen to it’s users unlike others and they are trying to make things work. The most sensitive subject was probably the privacy criticisms when certain applications (more…)

US seen by Californians and The World seen by Americans.

Probably the most popular map on the internet for the past month was this representation of United States as seen by Californians: Religious Nutballs in the East, Fake Cowboys in Texas, Old people are of course in Florida, the area around Vegas, Coffee area, the loud and obnoxious New Yorker’s area, and northern area around the lakes seen as part of Canada.

It is a quite funny and hilarious view that lead to many discussions and new maps drawn by other fellow Americans, the loud and obnoxious New Yorkers quickly reviewed the map into this (see right) while others demanded California be a new country, Texan cowboys said they had their own republic once and that could be an option again. Others went even further stating there should definitely be NoCal & SoCal (for Northern and Southern parts of California), or start wondering where did Alaska and Hawaii disappeared.

Speaking of New Yorkers actually, here’s the view they have for the world, as seen from the 9th avenue:

  • EuroEnglish: 5 year phase plan.

    EuroEnglish: 5 year phase plan.

I don’t know who is the author of the text below, but apart from the joke itself it offers a pretty good insight for the EuroEnglish reform issue. It’s been on the internet for quite some time already and a simple search on Google for “EuroEnglish” will most probably get you this:

The European Commission have just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the EU rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, Her Majesty’s Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5 year phase-in plan that would be known as “EuroEnglish”:

In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favor of the “k”. This should klear up konfusion and keyboards kan have one less letter. There will be growing publik enthusiasm in the sekond year, when the troublesome “ph” will be replaced with the “f”. This will make words like “fotograf” 20% shorter.

In the 3rd year, publik akseptanse of the new spelling kan be expekted to reach the stage where more komplikated changes are possible. Governments will enkorage the removal of double letters, which have always ben a deterent to akurate speling. Also, al wil agre that the horible mes of the silent “e”‘s in the language is disgracful, and they should go away. By the 4th yar, peopl wil be reseptiv to steps such as replasing “th” with “z” and “w” with “v”.

During ze fifz yar, ze unesesary “o” kan be dropd from vords kontaining “ou” and similar changes vud of kors be aplid to ozer kombinations of leters. After zis fifz yar, ve vil hav a reli sensibl riten styl. Zer vil be no mor trubls or difikultis and evrivun vil find it ezi tu understand ech ozer. ZE DREM VIL FINALI KUM TRU!

  • Ever wondered what’s on the other side of the earth?

Ever wondered what’s on the other side of the earth?

Have you ever thought what is on the opposite side of the earth? Imagine drilling a hole through the earth to the other side, you get the picture? I was wondering about that a long time ago, but get to see who lives on the other side just recently. First I had to find out how is it called, scientifically…

In geography, the antipodes (from Greek anti- “opposed” and pous “foot”) of any place on Earth is its antipodal point; that is, the region on the Earth’s surface which is diametrically opposite to it. Two points which are antipodal to one another are connected by a straight line through the centre of the Earth.

Earth antipodes map The coordinates of an antipode are in fact easily calculated by the following formula: If the coordinates (longitude and latitude) of a point on the Earth’s surface are (θ, φ), then the coordinates of the antipodal point can be written as (θ ± 180°,−φ). But there’s no actual need for you to calculate this, there are plenty of interactive maps online that will show you the exact antipode providing the initial point on earth. I know you must be anxious to find out who lives on the other side, so go ahead then, try these links: Map Tunneling Tool or Antipodes Map.

Disappointed? Chances are nobody lives there, since 70% of the earth are oceans and the majority of locations on land do not have land-based antipodes. But there are still a few match-ups.

Beijing have it’s antipode in Argentina, a city called Bahia Blanca, in fact the exact antipode of Bahia Blanca would be Tianjin so let’s just say somewhere near. Chisnau‘s antipode is somewhere in the South Pacific Ocean, so nobody on the other side except maybe some sharks and fishes. Xi’an have as antipode – Santiago, or more precisely Rancagua or San Bernardo in Chile. Drilling a hole from Shanghai will get you to Salto, Uruguay. Taiwan’s capital Taipei is antipodal to Paraguay’s capital – Asunción.

The almost exact list of antipodes includes: Wuhai (China) – Valdivia (Chile), Hamilton (New Zealand) – Cordoba (Spain), Palembang (Indonesia) – Neiva (Colombia) and some other. There are also a few curiosities in that matter, for instance Taiwan which was formerly called Formosa is partly antipodal to the province of Formosa in Argentina. Or Cheju Do island which is the southernmost Korean territory is antipodal to Brazilia’s most southerly town of Santa Vitoria do Palmar. And of course let’s not forget the North Pole and the South Pole – antipodes by definition.

Honglaowai: “If There Were No Communist Party, Then There Would Be No New China”

    Hong LaoWai
    Hong LaoWai

Like Gary Brolsma (the Numa Numa guy) and Mahir Cagri (the Turkish “I Kiss You” guy) we now have a new internet celebrity who’s name is not disclosed yet, but he calls himself – Honglaowai, or if translating from Chinese – the red foreigner. I’ve been watching his video’s he posted on YouTube and other Chinese video sharing sites like Tudou and Youku for a few months and I must admit his popularity is growing and if you haven’t heard yet of the Red Laowai just watch him!

So, who is HongLaowai and what does he do? Hmm… Imagine a drunk laowai in a KTV singing karaoke … now imagine him singing Chinese patriotic songs… and now imagine him naked… and in New York! You get the picture? Well, I over exaggerated a little bit, the part of him being naked and drunk, he is in fact sober and the part about being naked in the first video’s he posted refers to chest naked in fact. Below is his first video posted against the wall with a picture of Chairman Mao, which at the moment have over 70,000 views on YouTube since Nov.6, 2007 (but other video’s on Chinese sites all together have millions of views). He sings: “If There Were No Communist Party, Then There Would Be No New China” (沒有共產黨就沒有新中國).

  • New 10 RMB banknote to commemorate the 2008 Beijing Olympics

New 10 RMB banknote to commemorate the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Exactly one month before the start of the Beijing Olympic Games the People’s Bank of China issues a commemorative 10 RMB bill. It features the newly built already iconic image of the National Stadium known as the Bird’s Nest on the front and the ancient Greek statue of a discus thrower “Discobolus” on the back.

Since the commemorative banknote was issued in only 6 million copies it seems that the whole country rushed since morning to Bank of China branches to get their own copy because of a one banknote per customer policy. Immediately after the sale much higher prices for the 10 yuan Chinese banknote were reported, soaring as high as 1000 RMB per banknote! I personally heard of banknotes being sold forty times the initial price at 400 yuan, but I still think it’s too much. It’s probably just the initial rush, but I might be wrong of course. 6,000,000 banknotes for 1,321,851,888 people (2007 est.) makes about 1 banknote per every 220 people… seems enough!

But what all the western media sees is (more…)

  • My neighborhood getting ready for the Olympics!

My neighborhood getting ready for the Olympics!

Beijing is getting ready for the 2008 Olympics and the atmosphere of the Olympic Games approaching is everywhere. Even in my quiet neighborhood now you can see the red banners welcoming the games. It is quite funny actually, because they also translated the banners into English in an attempt to share the moment with laowai‘s also, but as usual it sounds Chinglish.

I’ve made a few pictures of the banners from my neighborhood in Heping Xi Qiao, but I’ve also seen similar red banners in many other places all over Beijing. The most used is of course the olympic slogan: “One world – One Dream”, but there are also various other slogans like: “Greet The Olympic Games Display Ethical Cultural Progress Foster Healthy Tendencies” (which is the usual non-sense translation to English). Or other recorded titles like: “Foster Beijing’s Image of Propriety and Righteousness Showcase The Culture Of The Olympic Games” and “Have A Part In Devote Oneself Feel Happy”. Among the understandable titles are: “Play The Host – Build New Beijing” (they did build a lot) or “Smiling Beijing Welcomes You” (which is probably the simplest and understandable one).
